Trans 101: A Pocket Guide to Language for Inclusion

February 04, 2020

For Issue 5 we teamed up with Lila Leatherman to create a pocket guide to language for inclusion.

Though transgender people make up a minority of the population in the US, they disproportionately experience violence, unemployment, housing and food insecurity, and mental health conditions. And make no mistake—this is because of the overwhelming lack of understanding of transgender identities, which leads to bias, discrimination, and compounded hardships.

Solving problems like these requires education, as well as robust community support structures, protective legislation, increased funding for trans advocacy, and appropriate consequences for anti-trans hate crimes. Learning the words is a dang good place to start.

You can download the DIY zine and instructions here.

Lila recently launched Lamella Consulting, which provides facilitation, education, and consultation designed to build empathy and advocacy with marginalized groups—with a particular focus on queer and trans people.
