FAQS

::: WHAT IS SISU?
Sisu represents a human being’s ability to face any adventure riddled with hardship, hopelessness, and impossibility, yet still chose to stay the course. In English, there is not one word to capture the truest meaning of sisu, which is why we tip our hats to the Finnish for the use of their ability to compact the essence of a such a complex, yet highly revered, human attitude into a four letter word. (And you know we love our four letter words.)

::: HOW OFTEN DO YOU PUBLISH?
Sisu Magazine is published quarterly. You can purchase individual copies at $15 or sign up for an annual subscription for $50. Annual subscriptions are paired with original art and other goodies that are going to make you feel SO GOOD.

::: PRINT IS DEAD SO WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
We believe that there are still human beings on this planet who relish in the rare moments where you find time to touch, feel, and smell a beautifully printed magazine, and read it cover to cover as you curl up with a cup of coffee. Print magazines remind us to take a break from our devices, to connect with the written word, and ultimately connect with the people behind the stories.

::: WHAT IS THE VISION BEHIND SISU MAGAZINE?
From start to finish, each issue of Sisu Magazine will bring together uninterrupted stories, brilliant photographs, and stunning art to evoke that indomitable human spirit that exists in all of us. More importantly, the experiences and perspectives of the contributing writers, photographers, and artists represent the collective voice that has been silenced for far too long.

When you pick up a copy of Sisu Magazine you’re not just getting access to content (without those bullshit ads that ruin your reading experience) that will make you say “Hell Yeah!” out loud, you’ll be contributing to the change we all want to see in messages and pictures that come across our screens and in the media.
What we don’t need more of is corporately sponsored junk that interrupts and invalidates the voices and messages coming through each page. What we need more of is women, people of color, and LGBTQIA+ rising up, getting active outside, and taking back control of our narrative.

::: WHO'S BEHIND THIS?
Jen Gurecki, the CEO of Coalition Snow, and Lauren Bello Okerman, the Creative Director at Coalition Snow, are leading the charge at Sisu Magazine as the Editor in Chief and Creative Editor, respectively. Sisu Magazine was born out of Jen's 70-day cycling trip across Africa (because sitting in the saddle by yourself for 8 hours a day leads to this kind of crazy ambition). Coalition Snow is the world's first company designing superlative skis and snowboards by women, for women. Simply stated, Coalition Snow makes women's skis and snowboards that don't suck. (And now you can add print magazines to that list.)
